Mindfulness is key to lasting happiness and a peaceful life. Our modern lives are almost designed to act without awareness and mindfulness. We spend a lot of time worrying about the past or the future rather than being mindful of the present moment. This leads to poor decisions or actions led by emotions relating to our past or our future. Mindfulness is the ‘intentional, accepting and non-judgmental focus of one's attention on the emotions, thoughts and sensations occurring in the present moment’. For those new to practicing mindfulness it is vital to have the least amount of distractions. Therefore we have created a quiet and peaceful environment for you to develop your practice and we have left books on Mindfulness for you to read. Our resident doctor can also guide you on this practice. We do run some special mindfulness retreats at certain times of the year. Please check our packages for more details. Yoga is said to be for the purpose of uniting the mind, body, and spirit. Many people think that yoga is just stretching or a cardio workout, which is how it is used in the western world. Yoga was initially developed so the meditative yogis could develop their physical body to enable them to sit for long hours in meditation. Yoga is about creating balance in the body through developing both strength and flexibility. This is done through the performance of poses or postures, each of which has specific physical benefits. The poses can be done quickly in succession, creating heat in the body through movement or more slowly to increase stamina and perfect the alignment of the pose. The poses are a constant, but the approach to them varies depending on the yoga tradition practiced. Science has shown many physical and mental benefits of regular yoga practice. At Plantation Villa, we use a number of fully qualified and experienced teachers to guide your daily yoga lesson. We have expert teachers from the Western countries like Europe and the US and also teachers from India and Sri Lanka. It does not matter whether you are a complete beginner or if you are an experienced practitioner. If you have practiced yoga before, specially in the west, you will find that the method of teaching by the Indian and Sri Lankan teachers are rather different. It is more towards the authentic form of meditative yoga. Please inform the teacher at the beginning of the class of your level and any ailments you may have such as joint aches etc. Feel free to discuss with our teacher on your likes/dislikes and any other yoga related queries you may have. Please check our packages for more details of special yoga retreats (click for Yoga Retreat package details)
Our meals are how we fuel our body. Eating nutritionally balanced meals in line with your body type will reduce a large amount of physical ailments. We will aim to ensure your daily intake of food is adequately balanced and aligned to your ‘doshas’ (ayurvedic constitution) and they will be supplemented with Ayurvedic Herbal Teas and Medicines. Your meals will be decided by the kitchen through consultation with our doctor. Majority of the food we serve you come from our own organic gardens and paddy fields. We also do not use any artificial taste enhancers so all of your food is super fresh, organic and healthy.
Eco Therapy or Nature Cure
Science has now proven that spending time in nature can significantly improve our health and wellbeing. University of Harvard and has found that “we have an innate, emotional need to connect with the environment”. It explains that human beings are drawn to life: Plants, animals, mountains, streams etc are things that matter to us, just as relationships with other people. This teaching has been endorsed by many psychologists and psychotherapists. Science have now proven that time with nature helps improve memory, lifts depression, reduce cardiovascular conditions and improve general mood and wellbeing. At Plantation Villa, we have tried to maintain our natural surroundings to ensure our guests can regain their connection with nature. The Villa is surrounded by a 30 Acre land of trees, bushes, streams, wild animals and all the beauty that nature provides. We only use organic matter in our plantations to fertilise our crops and we make a huge effort to grow plants which are now classified in the Critically Endangered list – you can read more about this in our ‘Adopt a Tree’ project.
Loving Kindness or ‘Metta’
The word ‘Mett?’ means Loving-kindness – the caring for the well-being of another living being, independent of approving or disapproving of them, or expecting anything in return. Benefits of Metta includes lowering of the stress hormone cortisol, lowering blood pressure, becoming self-aware, improved cognitive function, reduce pain intensity and unpleasantness, fight aging and making us better people. We try to practice Metta in daily life at The Villa by showing loving kindness to our guests, our team members, the community and nature around us. We would encourage you to do the same by practicing loving kindness towards yourselves, and all those who are a part of your lives – those who make you happy and those who make you sad and those who don’t play a significant enough role in your lives to cause either. You can also practice Metta towards your own emotions. We provide a peaceful and safe environment for you to try and develop your Metta practice.
Altruism is when we put other people’s needs before our own. While many of us feel too stressed and busy to worry about helping others, or say we’ll focus on doing good deeds when we have more ‘spare time’, evidence shows that helping others is actually beneficial for your own mental and physical health and wellbeing: It promotes positive physiological changes in the brain associated with happiness, It brings a sense of belonging and reduces isolation, it improves confidence, control, happiness and optimism, it reduces stress, it helps get rid of negative feelings and it can help us live longer. So we try to involve all our guests in our community and nature projects and activities. Whilst it helps others, it will also help your wellbeing!
